D457: GMSL to USB or Ethernet

Hi Roman Leuzinger  Although the D457 has a USB port, it is intended for use in debugging or production line testing and the camera should be used with a GMSL FAKRA cable.  A 1000 mm / 1 m cable is supplied with the camera.

The D457 is also not a 'plug and play' camera like other RealSense 400 Series camera models are.  Intel can provide a driver for AGX Xavier developer boards to customers who have a non disclosure agreement (NDA) with Intel.  If an AGX Xavier computing board is not being used then the driver must be ported by the customer for use on their particular computing device.

Additionally, a de-serializer component that contains Maxim technology is required to decide the streams.  Intel can supply a de-serializer product if customers contact the RealSense sales team, or alternatively a de-serializer by another provider that contains Maxim technology can be used.

Given your requirement to use a USB connection rather than GMSL FAKRA, the optimal solution may be to use a Chameleon XS commercial enclosure product for RealSense D415, D435 and D455 USB cameras that has IP66 and IP67 protection.

I contact the Sales team. I find only the product below. But no specification for it.

Is there any chance that the products which I have found by research can work?

Other camera vendors do have such bridges but do not sell them standalone:

I will refer your question about whether a GMSL to USB convertor device can work with D457 to a team member of this Intel RealSense Help Center forum.  Thanks very much for your patience.

    Hi Roman,

A GMSL to USB conversion device to allow GMSL connection to be attached to a USB port likely would not work. The D457 already has a USB port that is designed for debugging and not normal camera operation.

Can we at least use the USB port for development purposes?

Hi Roman Leuzinger  I have received information from Intel that it is fine to use the D457 only in USB mode and it has the same USB performance and the same feature-set as the D455, with the added IP65 dust and water protection.  So it is absolutely valid to purchase the D457 for the protection and use it as a USB camera instead of in GMSL / FAKRA mode.

Hi all, we have the same need, and we already tried connecting to the camera by USB, but it didn't work.

I remember I had a call with Intel and the support team told me there was a switch inside for activating the USB mode.

Please can somebody help on this? Is there any screw to remove to access the mentioned switch? Or other method to enable USB mode?

UPDATE: I think I've found the solution to my problem already in the website: https://support.intelrealsense.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/14840675121043-RealSense-D457-USBC-mode-camera-not-detected-Ubuntu-22-04-

Hi Vittorio Lumare  The mode switch is under a small removable cap on top of the D457 camera.  There is not a screw to remove but a thin long object such as a sewing pin or a bent paperclip will need to be inserted in the cap's hole to remove the cap.

Once the cap is removed, the object that you used to remove the cap can be inserted into the recess that the switch is in at the side of the recess labelled 'MIPI' and gently move the object sidewards to push the switch to the position labelled 'USB'.  There is no other way to enable USB mode.
