D457 compatibility with Jetson agx Orin Development kit
-
Hi Rui Coelho The company Connect Tech have an AGX Orin product that has in-built support for D457 and does not require the purchase of a separate deserializer.
Deserializer products that are compatible with D457 are ones with a Maxim MAX9296A deserializer component built into them. This includes one by the company Leopard Imaging that Intel confirmed will be D457 compatible.

If you would like the IP65 waterproof and dustproof properties of D457 but do not require GMSL, the D457 has a mode switch within its casing that can be set to USB instead of MIPI (its default setting). When the switch is in the USB position, the camera is detected as a D455, with the same feature-set and performance as a D455 but with the added IP65 protection.
When the D457 is in MIPI mode for use with GMSL, it requires a reference driver provided by Intel. This driver is designed to work with AGX Xavier instead of Orin and with Intel's own deserializer product, so customers will need their developers to port the driver themselves to the hardware that they are using if it is not Xavier and the Intel deserializer.

Hi MartyG,
Thank you for the quick reply. So, if one chooses to use USB mode on the D457 camera, you can readly connect it to the Jetson AGX Orin Development kit, without the need to port any drivers?
Is there any difference in performance using the USB or the GSML connection?
What is the maximum USB cable length suitable for the D457 camera?
Can you connect multiple D457 cameras to a single Jetson/PC using USB?
Best regards -
Yes, in USB mode you do not need to port the driver. You simply connect the camera to a USB port on the computer.
GMSL is a high bandwidth connection that has lower power, lower ESD/EMI noise, lower latency and longer cable length compared to USB and higher bandwidth compared to Ethernet. The official D457 information page at the link below has further details.

Maximum USB cable length will depend on the cable. A premium quality USB cable may be able to extend to 5 meters, whilst a cable with active repeater components in it can transmit up to 20 meters. Fiber optic can reach up to 300 meters. The company Newnex supplies USB equipment that is validated for use with RealSense.

Nvidia Jetson boards can have multiple RealSense 400 Series cameras connected to the same board via USB, preferably on a mains electricity powered USB hub.
