IR Filter Cutout

Hi Roman Leuzinger  The filter on the D435f and D435if (a D435i with filter) blocks visible light frequencies whilst allowing near-infrared frequencies to enter the sensor.  It is not an IR-Cut filter (like the one on the D405 model) that blocks the IR dot pattern from being seen.  The dot pattern projection will be visible to the D435f and be included on the infrared image.

The official information page for the D435f model states that the filter can enhance depth noise quality and performance range.

The filter may be helpful for situations where strong light, such as sunlight in an outdoor environment, could cause disruption to the images.  It is not compulsory to apply filtering to the lenses though.

Thank you for the response. However, I'm referring to the cutout that is located on top of the dot projector (the IR filter has a hole where the dot projector is located). Technically, the IR light from the dot projector would get through the filter. Hence, I am asking if the reason that you are doing it is to not make the light signal weaker from the dot projector or if you fear unwanted reflections or maybe a different reason.

If a window covered the projector then there would be a risk of the projector's laser reflecting and scattering, as advised by a RealSense team member at the link below.
