L515 Locked Update Firmware Fails

After doing some more research, I've found bin to Intel Hex converters.  Theoretically would it be possible to disassemble that and interpret into C language with radare2 or something?  The goal would be to simply change the firmware version number to something higher, then recompile to assembly, back to Intel Hex and bin just to trigger the update.

    Hi Morphysmate,
Thanks for reaching out to us.
May I know which version of Intel® RealSense™ SDK are you using on your machine?

v2.48 installed on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS on a Jetson Nano. The camera isn't recognized with any higher version.

I have it installed on a Windows 10 machine as well but realsense-viewer takes around 5 minutes to load with the camera plugged in and about another 5 minutes before it becomes responsive. So, I would prefer to use my Jetson Nano.

    Hi Morphysmate,

    Thanks for your information.

Referring to L500 Series firmware downloads, supported SDK version for L500 series is 2.47.0, and the supported firmware version is 1.5.8.1.

Could you please downgrade your SDK version and see if the issue was able to resolve?

    Regards,

    Wan

The problem persists. The issue is I cannot upgrade the firmware because the camera is locked from the 20 downgrade limit, so I am stuck on fw version 01.04.00.00. The firmware cannot be upgraded because there is no higher version than 1.5.8.1

    Hi Morphysmate,

    Thanks for your information.

Referring to L500 Series firmware downloads, SDK version 2.35.2 is also supported, and the supported firmware version is 1.4.1.0.

Could you please downgrade your SDK version without changing firmware version and see if the issue was able to resolve?

    Regards,

    Wan

This is the error I get when enabling the depth stream on v2.35.2.

If I try to upgrade the firmware, I get the same error as before. The camera is locked and can only be upgraded to a fw version higher than 1.5.8.1, which will never be released!!

    Hi Morphysmate,

    Thanks for your information.

Referring to Firmware Update Tool (rs-fw-update), could you please use the device firmware update tool that comes with the librealsense SDK (starting version 2.35.2) and see if the issue was able to resolve?

    Regards,

    Wan

I get the same error using rs-fw-update. The fw update will only work with a version higher than 1.5.8.1, which does not and will never exist. This is a known problem with the realsense cameras. They are locked once the 20 downgrade limit has been reached.

    https://github.com/IntelRealSense/librealsense/issues/7783

Is there no higher unreleased or beta fw that exists? Is the camera just a paperweight now?

    Hi Morphysmate,

    Sorry for the inconvenience.

    Referring to this thread:

"Once the downgrade limit of 20 is reached then from that point onward, the camera can only be upgraded to a newer firmware version than the currently installed version."

On another note, referring to https://www.intelrealsense.com/message-to-customers/?_ga=2.221485464.1693326339.1685936057-840784332.1685936057:

"Future development on these products will end from February 2022, but any purchases will still be supported through their 1-year warranty period."

Sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for your support.

    Sincerely,

    Wan
