Realsense D405 vs D435if
Hey folks,
I was looking at purchasing a depth camera to measure the depth of objects close to the ground. The object's height will be in the range of 1cm to 15 cm from the ground and the camera 50-60cm from the ground. The camera is going to be used outdoors. I tried the D455 camera and it was unable to resolve the depth of objects near the ground. Will the D435if be able to provide an accurate depth map in such conditions?

Hi Pranavmp If the camera is positioned 50-60 cm above the ground then the D435if should be able to capture the object if it is further than around 10 cm away from the camera.
The issue that you are experiencing with the D455 may be that it has a minimum depth sensing distance of around 50 cm instead of 10, so if the camera is 50 cm away from the ground and the object is reaching up 15 cm from the ground, the upper height of the object may be below the D455's minimum depth sensing distance and so unable to be depth-captured properly.
If that is the case then instead of purchasing a D435if, a simple solution may be to continue to use the D455 and set an option called Disparity Shift to a value of 100 or 200. Increasing Disparity Shift above its default value of zero reduces the minimum depth sensing distance of the camera and so enables surfaces less than 50 cm from the camera to be more easily captured on the depth image.
