To avoid concerns about the future of the 400 Series, it was recently stated that the 400 Series is expected to remain viable through 2021.

Intel's press release states that the L515 retains its depth accuracy throughout its lifespan without the need for calibration.

An initial 25 page version of the L515 data sheet PDF document is also available. The data sheet includes a mechanical drawing on page 19 to aid preparation for integration of the L515 into projects.

The L515 is not a stereo depth camera like the 400 Series. It has more in common with 'Time Of Flight' sensing technology.
Intel worked out a way to use a component called a MEMS Mirror to enable power-efficient lidar scanning in a very small hardware package that is only about 26 mm thick.
The focus on power efficiency of course has an effect on range compared to larger scale forms of lidar such as scanning deep jungle from a plane to find hidden ancient ruins. For indoor applications though, L515 and its ability to be attached to handheld-size devices because of its compact size will undoubtedly be transformative in many fields.
The L515 supports the Y8 IR format. The L515's IR image represents the intensity of the reflected IR laser reflected off the objects in the scene.
Intel have been working for months to integrate the L515 into the RealSense SDK. Dorodnic the RealSense SDK Manager said today that it should be expected that 99% of the SDK's capabilities will be available out of the box.
